Murree Maneuvers

Author: S A J Shirazi
Experience to hill station Murree can be a mixed bag. It is popular for cold pine forests, amidst magnificent mountain scenery that make it a first choice for a day's outing or serious hill walking. It is common with locals throughout the country as well as foreigners in nearby Islamabad on the run from the sweltering heat of plains in summer. And in summers it is crowded like a cinema hall some time. This archetypal hill station is famous for other things too: It is inconvenient political pawn to keep the loyal and or hideout for foreign dignitaries on their way to secret strategic missions elsewhere.

In the Himalayan foothills Murree -- known as Malika-e-Kohsar meaning the queen of hills -- was founded as a hill station by the British in 1851. Like other cities set up by the British, the town has the Mall for promenading, parks, churches, schools, clubs and plenty of other crumbling colonial charms. Remember, during British rule, access to the Mall was restricted for locals. After independence Murree has once again become the summer retreat of the government and since Islamabad became the capital of Pakistan in 1962, has expanded rapidly. There isa governor house, other government houses and summer homes of affluent class from all over the country. The residences are built on thesummit and sides of an irregular ridge, and command magnificent viewsover forest-clad hills and deep valleys, studded with villages andcultivated fields, with snow-covered peaks of Kashmir in background.
Murree town spreads along the top of a ridge for about five kilometres. At the north-east end is Kashmir Point, with views across the valley of the Jhelum River into Azad Kashmir. At the south-westend is Pindi Point, looking back towards Rawalpindi and Islamabad.Between the two runs the Mall, at the centre of which is the main shopping area, where visitors flock. Most conspicuous rendezvous in the town is General Post Office on the Mall.

Apart from odd looking ruins of Murree Brewery (shifted to Rawalpindi long ago), there is an Ecology Centre that was established in 1960 to experiment with environment friendly agricultNewsural processes such as green houses to grow winter crops. Although fruit and vegetables are important crops at the Centre but this institute has played significant role in the mainstream agriculture through its work once real rust. The site was specially selected after a thorough surveyby Canadian team of experts that visited Gilgit, Chitral, Swat, Kaghanand Azad Kashmir. The Centre has done some considerable work to extend the carrying capacity of the land. Other than this, economy of the area is predominantly agricultural though land holdings are small. Orlocals have some openings in tourism industry that is still in the initial stages of development.

In addition to sunsets and cloud effects seen daily during the rain sand good weather, trekking or riding in the chair-lifts are Murree'smain amusements. But one can turn the soft jaunt into a daunting experience in the name of adventure. Who stops! Like for more daring types and those who want to beat the crowds and still enjoy the green environs of Murree, the best is to explore the surrounding areas. There are many defined walking trails in adjoining country that is well wooded and its scenery attractive: from Islamabad to Tret, from Tret to Ghora Gali (where "dak" horses used to change during Britishera), from Ghora Gali to Murree, from Murree to Barian and ChanglaGali with Swar Gali and Khaira Gali in between and from Changala Galito Nathia Gali through Ayubia and Dunga Gali. From Nathiagali a common trekking route is to Thandiani with an overnight stay in the way.

Though sometime out of compulsion, I have been walking on Murree-Kakul (Abbottabad) route for sometime. During training in Military AcademyKakul, even fun trips to Murree customarily used to be converted in awalk with big packs (pack point zero eight) instead of trendy and light backpacks on the back. Out of twenty six items, from needle to blanket to venom antidotes, one was supposed to keep in the packs only map and compasses were useful. Rest used to look like an added load about as useful wet matches during rain?
But what if sometime one wants to escape into open solitude  in to aimlessness, into the moral holiday of running some pure hazard, inorder to sharpen the edge of life, to taste hardship, and to become pelled to work desperately for a moment at no matter what? That might be the reason for my once deciding to go back from Murree to Kakul cross-country.
Walking a series of hills along the ridge between Murree and Abbottabad is the way to see the green mountain glen, as it requiresto be seen. Murree is over 2,200 meters above sea level whereas Abbottabad lies at the height of 1200 meters therefore walking 70 kilometers downhill from Murree to Abbottabad, even cross country, should be an easy option. But it is not. The contours, those thin, maroon lines on maps of the area are not easy to negotiate on ground. That is what I found during my zigzagging along the contours.
First it is a climb. I felt comfortable and warm but every now andthen I had to go a little down too and then "sweat became a fridge." Inever got warm again. It became soon clear that I could not walk straight. So I decided to stay at Nathiagalli. Next day, I still had cold feet but from there on it went down fast and did make it in the evening. Now I have forgotten the agony of carrying the weight of my pack zero eight but till today I have been able to preserve the feeling stirred by encounter with natural beauty in the way. The wildflowers were big and grass green. It was all very silent. I felt the true essence of a place, for seeing without feeling can obviously be uncaring; while feeling without seeing can be blind.
Walking parallel to Khanpur, at the bottom of a visibly used track in a small bowl like gorge one finds a warning sign posted by some NGO concerned with conservation of wildlife and nature. "Save the Wildlife," it advises. Beneath the images of the different birds founding the area, independent visitors had scrawled their names and someone had written his own impromptu comments that reads, "Wish you were here with me." Very apt! In the way, you also see stacks of animal fodder to be used in winters, villagers coming down the hills following donkey loaded with dried wood or pruning of trees and an axehanging on side, or carrying the load on heads for use as fire wood,or a rabbit frolicking on the grass, maybe a rat. Or you come across red cheeked and friendly kids asking for pencils, their faces bathe din peace. The peace and serenity in the area has a marvelous effect on the nerves.
Most hard core travelers  particularly foreigners, come up with some daisy character who came "offering them hashish, heroin, sledge, or something even more bizarre when they write about their travel experiences in Pakistan, perhaps in an effort to make their tales rich in adventure, absurdity and humor  Or they tell harrowing tales liketheir belongings stolen on gun point. Maybe they think this makes their stories culturally more erudite. But in this very touristy area(and even during my other long hauls elsewhere), what I could come across are many kindnesses from any thing but ordinary people. I was overwhelmed by the consideration I was shown during my cross country walk by a humble and hospitable local Malik Nawab Khan, an ex serviceman, who offered me food. His home was in a deadbeat place, cluster ofa few houses on my way and away from any where. Exhausted, and wanting to rest my feet we settled for tea. That was one of the best and much needed hot cups of hot tea (with solid boiled eggs) that I took. Hehad told me to keep a lemon and suck on it while walking hard and long in hills. It gives strength and quenches thrust. He also said, "Tire the mountain not yourself." I realize the folk wisdom in the advicesevery time I walk. And we still are in communication with each other.Malik Nawab remains another reason for me to visit the area more frequently.
Hunger for nature becomes more intense as one sees pristine wilderness turning into a scarce commodity. Revisiting a place like Murree does not put me off. - I find a new and original angle every time! I love it every time.

Places To Visit By Car From Islamabad

Places To Visit By Car From Islamabad

Author: Jimmy Carnes
Traveling along the various roads in Islamabad you cannot help but observe the astonishing high regard for SUV automobiles here as opposed to any other important city in Pakistan. One would instantly connect this circumstance with the significant population of property owners and political personalities established in Islamabad but that is not the only explanation for the common utilization of four wheel drives here. Islamabad is one of Pakistanis only organized, ultramodern cities encircled by sensational flourishing hills and leads to a variety of mind-blowing towns in the northern areas of Pakistan.
Routes going from Islamabad to many sites up North have witnessed substantial upgrading in the preceding several years. However, past a particular place, fortified roads are no longer accessible and the greater part of the country is unreachable by conventional vehicles. Places are reachable via natural routes made by constant use and are utilized by more seasoned drivers who are acclimatized to these regions and have commonly journeyed along these routes. With declivitous precipices and numerous landslides it is undesirable for car owners unacquainted to these places to drive without the assistance of a guide.

The most well known SUVs utilized to get these places include the Pajero Intercooler and the Toyota Prado. Other open-top jeeps are also utilized but are not as accepted with families due to the likelihood of heavy rain or the freezing climate. It is uncomplicated to lease one of these vehicles along with a qualified driver for individually organized excursions or as regularly promoted tour packages. It is always smart to pay a little more cash and take a dependable tour guide to steer clear of any unwanted occurrences.
islamabad

The captivating northern areas are home to a few of the most breathtaking locations across the globe. It is in these places that world famous mountain ranges like the Himalayas and Hindukush unite and are an admired stopover for hikers. An alternative exciting point easy to get to in your SUV is the Kalash valley, whose residents are supposed to be the offspring of the Greek armies led by Alexander the Great. A more or less unaffected society, their culture continues to remain mostly the same ever since ancient times. There is a lot to see here including their extraordinary music.
islamabad1
A reasonable number of streams and lakes can also be viewed in the northern areas of Pakistan, the most acknowledged being Saiful Muluk, situated a mind-blowing3200 meters above sea level making it one of the highest lakes on the globe. The setting is astounding and shining waters reflect the astonishingly ravishing bordering snow laden mountaintops. Trout fishing is a well-liked pursuit in these places and a grand location for anglers.  The distinguished Shandur Pass also provides two very awe-inspiring lakes.
islamabad

To refer to the whole area in detail would demand a proper volume and a countless number of these are easily available in Pakistan as well as abroad. Pakistan is blessed to have astonishingly ravishing places like Saidu and Khunjerab Pass and a range of influences from old civilizations like Moguls. The northern areas demand a substantial number of trips and plenty of days to cover substantially and it is always clever to drive in a steadfast SUV to make the experience a bit more entertaining.

You will find wide varieties of roses, petunia, pansy, chrysanthemum, marigold and many other flowers along the roads, main buildings and houses.
It was in 1958 that a commission was formed to work out a plan to build a new capital for Pakistan near Rawalpindi .Karachi was at that time the first capital of the country. It was Field Marshal Mohammad Ayub Khan the President of the time who decided that the capital be shifted to a new place later on named ‘Islamabad'.
Islamabad is a pretty place with a good climate. It was made a part of Rawalpindi district. After a few years Islamabad became a district. As it is near Rawalpindi the two cities are called twin cities.
In Islamabad there are many places worth visiting both modern and historical. By 1960 federal government offices started shifting from Karachi to Rawalpindi in the first phase and then gradually to Islamabad.

In 1961 I was transferred as medical social officer to Central Government Hospital now called Benazir Bhutto Hospital. In 1963 I shifted to Islamabad. At that time I was working in the Ministry of Information which was still situated in Rawalpindi.
When I arrived in Islamabad with my family in 1963 all of us liked the green surroundings and the fact that at the time the population of the city was quite limited. In those days a public bus service was very popular. These double decker red buses newly purchased used to ply between Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Kids and youngsters liked sitting and watching the surroundings from the upper storey of the buses and enjoyed a lot.
While in Islamabad we started to visit old and new sites turn by turn. New buildings and houses were being built for the incoming people from Karachi who were enthusiastically welcomed.
In the beginning a market called ‘Aabpara' was built from where we could purchase our groceries etc. Aabpara, Kohasar and Covered markets were few of the oldest markets built in the city and still maintain their charm. In one of the oldest sectors F-6 of the city was a small market called ‘Bazaar Number 4'. I still love and visit Kohsar Market in sector F-6. The Market is popular both among the locals and foreigners as it is close to Margalla Hills and has open café, a good old bookshop, a bakery and an old shop selling furniture made of rattan or cane. The number of markets grew with the expansion of the city in the later years. A wide variety of souvenirs are available in almost all the main markets in different sectors particularly F-6 and F-7 and the Kohsar market. After leaving Rawalpindi we lived in the sector F-6 of Islamabad for a long time.
In various sectors of the city you will find several big and small restaurants in lovely settings excelling in both local cuisine and that of many other countries.
Islamabad has its own peculiar culture. There are many beautiful sites to visit. As you travel on its highway which connects it with Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Murree etc. when you reach the Zero Point under a bridge, you can turn right and see a very vast green area called Garden Area for your recreation and pleasure. There is a lot of greenery there where many different plants, trees and beautiful types of flowers can be seen. It's a great pleasure to see the Annual Flower Show and competition. The Folk Heritage Museum and a beautiful restaurant based on theme of cultural heritage of Pakistan are also situated in the area full of trees with winding roads. As you go further on the main road you can visit Islamabad Club where there are many facilities like swimming, golf, squash etc. there is also a cinema. Good food is also available in the restaurant. There are two five star hotels nearby. From the Murree Road connects Islamabad to a famous hill station in Pakistan -Murree. The same road connects both Islamabad and Rawalpindi with Murree. Nearby there is a beautiful village called ‘Chak Shahzad' where several big and small houses are built on farms. There are also plant and flower nurseries in the village.
As you go on the Murree road at a small distance there is lake in very attractive setting and the jungle right next to the lake is an ideal treat for bird watchers.
When you go towards east of Islamabad there is an ancient site where there is a big mausoleum called ‘Bari Imam' (meaning religious & spiritual leader of the whole world) of a saint who had come there long time back. It is said that he performed many miracles and people started to go to his shrine to pay respects and pray. Before the arrival of the saint the village was called ‘Chor Pur' meaning village of thieves. By the grace of God the local population was converted to a good and prosperous life by following the living saint of the time. He devoted himself to not only religious and spiritual activities but was successful in converting people to do good deeds and build their characters anew. The village since then is known as ‘Noor Pur Shahan' meaning the village of enlightened elders. It may be mentioned that as you enter the village good meals are available on nominal payment. There is also a small market where many beautiful things like rosaries, bangles and necklaces made of colorful glass and a lot of charming souvenirs are available. The annual birth celebrations of the saint called ‘Urs' in the local language is attended by hundreds of devotees and pilgrims. An annual fair is also part of the Urs held there.

It is related that another local saint who was very devoted to religion was teaching Holy Quran to his disciples under a beautiful tree in the nearby mosque. One day he received a messenger from a little distance where the then king of the country was waiting to see and pay respects to the saint in the mosque. The saint declined to see the king as he was busy in teaching the Holy Quran. Finally the king had to go back. Further east in the mountains there is a cave where the saint used to pray and meditate. It is a popular site both for pilgrims and tourists.
As you go further east there is a small village called "Ratta Hoter'. When you enter it a very cool and pleasant breeze welcomes you even in summers. There are mountains at the back of the village. There are also a mausoleum and a mosque in the village. CDs playing ‘Qawwali'- sacred sufi music most of the time add to the attraction of the atmosphere. As you go further west up the hill from mausoleum at a short distance there is a lovely spring whose water is known for its healing power for skin diseases. It is said that the spring was the result of a miracle of the saint now buried in the mausoleum.
While going to the west there is another old village called ‘Saidpur' built on hills. The village has been transformed into a model village still retaining its old charm.
There is an historic Hindu temple which is preserved there. Nearby is an old house where a local villager had once made a train made of clay which is preserved and displayed in his ancestral house. This is visited by many people and tourists. There is a stream in the center of the village and also a mosque. Across the stream there is a small market which is famous for various traditional articles including flower pots, mugs, glasses and toys made of clay. The shop owner very humbly offers the visitors to make any item from clay using his potter's wheel, which I must say is great fun.The market is also known for a local delicacy called ‘Pakora' and other things. You will also find an arts gallery and café. It is an amalgamation of both old and new.
As we go to the north of the village we can climb up to Margalla Hills which are a part of the Himalaya mountain range. Through different green and beautiful tracks with natural habitat all around you can easily reach the top of the hills. On the top there is long road from east to west where it is a pleasure to walk to see all kinds of greenery, colorful birds and monkeys jumping all around. As you travel further east there are several attractive tracks that lead you to a zoo and further up the hills there are several picnic spots mainly ‘Daman-koh' meaning heart of the mountains. This spot leads you further up the hills to another tourist attraction called ‘Pir Sohawa'. You can get an excellent view of the entire Islamabad city from both the places. Pir Sohawa is named after a saint whose tomb is also located on the hill top. There is even a road atop the hills that leads to Abbottabad a hill station.
There are many parks and mosques in various sectors of Islamabad. There is one grand mosque in the north called Faisal Masjid which is a masterpiece of Turkish architecture. One of the most famous painters of Pakistan Gul Gee has contributed a lot to beautify the mosque with his work.

Close to Margalla Hills is a village called ‘Golra Sharif' named after a saint whose grand mausoleum and a large mosque where hundreds of people go for prayers especially on Fridays. There are several graves of various holy men. Live ‘Qawwali'- a form of sufi music and dhammal-sufi dance is going on there round the clock. Books on religion and spiritualism, rosaries, garlands and a variety of souvenirs are available at the market there. There is a guest house for pilgrims also there.
Towards the western end of Margalla hills traveling on the Golra road there is a small road that leads to some ancient caves called ‘Shah Allah Ditta' named after the sufi saint of the area. There is an old mosque, stream and an old baoli (step wells) there too. En route to the caves you will find rows of old shady banyan tress. Sacred old sites of Buddhists are located in Margalla Hills.
At a short distance there is Golra railway station. It is known for its lovely location. Rows of cool and shady banyan trees welcome you to the place. When you sit on the benches there is very pleasant and cool breeze even in summers. The railway station was built in 1800s by the British. The building on the premises has been preserved as Railway Heritage Museum which has old lamps, crockery, guns, first aid kits, spare parts of train, furniture, a piano, etc. and particularly an old Maharaja's train beautifully preserved with all its splendor. Train safari is another part of the whole attraction. I love & cherish the time at the small historical railway station sitting on a bench under banyan trees in cool breeze watching and listening to whistling old trains come and go.

Education and Islam

Education and Islam

Author: G.M. Wani
Knowledge search in Islam
By Prof Ghulam Mohyuddin Wani
Islam means peace .
Islam has started with the word Iqra meaning read ,thus education , knowledge ,research, wisdom and patience are the basics to Islam. The first concept of an secular educational set up other than the formal religious madrasas were started by the holy prophet in his initial days .It is said that when educated Jews were captured and brought to Muhammad tied down by his army.He ordered all to be treated equally as his other soldiers .He further declared all those prisoners as free, who teach ten muslim children , how to read and write.

Here we may say it was the knowledge which was stressed and not the theology which was unknown to these first professors of the modern world .He allowed them same food as was given to his army .He directed his Islamic soldiers to remove the ropes immediately. This should serve as guidance and give messages to the humanityThus abduction or ill treatment to the captured soliders is unislamic and never perpetuvated by prophets army under his command. However later some rulers and invaders with muslim names forgot these rules and devine commandments .
Even now the civilized too have Gotamalla PRISONS and harsh human rights violatios ,but might is right is the order of the world leading to destruction of the humanity. Thus education and peace is the unifing code for the humanity. Education is the knowledge of putting one's potentials to maximum use. Without education, no one can find the proper right path in this world.
EDUCATION AND INNER PURITY
This importance of education is basically for two reasons. Education makes man a right thinker. Without education, no one can think properly in an appropriate context . It tells man how to think and how to make decision. The second reason for the importance of education is that only through the attainment of education, man is enabled to receive information from the external world. It is well said that "Without education, man is as though in a closed room and with education he finds himself in a room with all its windows open towards outside world." This is why Islam attaches such great importance to knowledge and education. When the Quran began to be revealed, the first word of its first verse was 'Iqra' that is, read..
The reflective book of Holy Quran is so rich in content and meaning that if the history of human thought continues forever, this book is not likely to be read to its end. Every day it conveys a new message to the humanity. Every morning, it gives us new thoughtful ideas and bound us in the boundaries of ethics.
QURANIC MESSAGES
Islamic Education is one of the best systems of education, which makes an ethical groomed person with all the qualities, which he/she should have as a human being. The Western world has created the wrong image of Islam in the world. They don't know that our teachings are directly given to us from Allah, who is the creator of this world, through our Prophets.Muslims believe in 144 thousand prophets in this world and Muhamad being the last one .Quran says all regions, tribes and parts of the universe have had God message through their prophets.
Thus it testifies all prophets be itHAZRAT Noah,ESSA,MUSA,OR any one unmanned like Krishna,Ram or many others who all preached divine love of humanity and peace not war.It is tryany of the devine gospels or Ayats being misinterpreted and misused by the evil to capture worldly luxury and riches. We all are the progeny of Adam and thus equal and brothern.Whole universe needs care and protection from evil.Soone or later we have to recognize it .
The Muslims all over the world are thirsty of acquiring quality education. They know their boundaries and never try to cross it. It is the West, which has created a hype that the Muslim are not in a path of getting proper education. They think that our education teaches us fighting, about weapons, etc., which is so false. This is true that there are certain elements, which force an individual to be on the wrong path, because as we will mould a child, they will be like that, but it doesn't mean that our religion teaches improperly to us. Our Holy Prophet (SAW), said, Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave. And: Seek knowledge even [if it is to be found in a place as distant as China. At the battle of Badr, in which our beloved Holy Prophet (SAW) gained victory over his foes, seventy people of the enemy rank were taken to prison.
These prisoners were literate people. In order to benefit from their education the Prophet declared that if one prisoner teaches ten Muslim children how to read and write, this will serve as his ransom and he will be set free. This was the first school in the history of Islam established by the Prophet himself with all its teachers being non-Muslims. The Sunnah of the Prophet shows that education is to be received whatever the risk involved.
